Few theater posters of the 1890s sold a play as boldly as this one, promising a "grand spectacular production" and a "realistic melo-drama" in the same breath. The black-and-white lithograph was printed in New York by the H.C. Miner Lithographing Company, a well-known firm in theatrical advertising, and its copyright notice also names Marble Scott. Melodramas of this period relied on stage effects and sharp contrasts between virtuous and villainous characters, and the poster's emphasis on both spectacle and realism shows how producers pitched such shows to audiences.
