The distinguishing feature of this 1900 poster is its star billing: James O'Neill is named as Edmond Dantes, a role he had made famous across the country. O'Neill played the Count of Monte Cristo for decades, and the production traveled widely under the management of Liebler and Company, one of the leading theatrical producers of the era. The lithograph was printed in color by the U.S. Printing Company's Russell-Morgan shop in Cincinnati and New York, a firm known for large, eye-catching theater bills. Dumas's 1844 novel, on which the play is based, gave O'Neill a vehicle that audiences of the period returned to again and again.
