The poster's own boast, that *McFadden's Flats* "has made many millions laugh," is typical of 1890s theatrical advertising, which leaned on bold claims to draw crowds to touring productions. The title refers to a comic stage piece about a boisterous tenement household, the kind of working-class farce that was popular with American audiences at the turn of the century. The lithograph was produced in 1899 by the U.S. Printing Co. of Cincinnati, and the Russell-Morgan Print label marks it as part of the output of one of the city's major poster houses. Cincinnati lithographers supplied many theatrical companies with large, color-heavy sheets like this one, which were pasted on walls and billboards across the country.
