This 1898 black-and-white lithograph advertises William Calder's production of *John Martin's Secret* by Sutton Vane, and its tagline, "You'll never live to tell the secret," promises a thriller built around a hidden truth. The H.C. Miner Litho. Co. of New York printed it, one of the firms that turned out large runs of theatrical posters for touring companies and local theaters in the late 1890s. Those posters relied on bold lettering and dramatic images to catch the eye of passersby, since they were often the main way a show was advertised before it arrived in town.
