Lew Wallace's 1880 novel *Ben-Hur* reached the stage in this 1899 production, presented by Klaw & Erlanger at the Broadway theater in New York and dramatized by William Young. The poster was printed in color by the Strobridge Lithographing Company of Cincinnati and New York, a firm known for bold, crowded theatrical lithographs of the period. Young's adaptation followed Judah Ben-Hur, a Jewish prince caught up in Roman rule in Judea, and the large, vivid layout reflects how the producers marketed the show as a grand spectacle.
