A toast to "the king of Glen and Crag," printed beneath the design, sets the tone of this lithograph: a kilted Highlander raising a glass, with a deer in the scene to evoke the hunting country of the Scottish Highlands. Sidney R. Ellis's *Bonnie Scotland* was a melodrama, a popular kind of touring stage entertainment in the 1890s built on sentiment and spectacle. The poster was printed in 1895 by the Strobridge Lithographing Company, a Cincinnati firm whose bright theatrical bills were widely circulated across the United States. Its tartan, sport and romantic Highland imagery shows how American audiences of the period were drawn to an idealized Scotland.
