A figure in a kilt stands at the center of this 1895 melodrama poster, and the caption "Humphrey accuses Buchanan" points to the dramatic confrontation the play is built around. The lithograph was produced by the Strobridge Lithographing Company, a major American printer of theatrical posters, with shops in Cincinnati and New York. Posters of this kind promoted touring productions through bold color and a single charged moment, and the accusation scene reflects the blame-driven plotting common to melodrama of the period. The Scottish costume also reflects the late nineteenth-century fashion for Highland dress on the stage.
