The poster advertises Buckley's New Orleans Serenaders, a minstrel troupe whose touring route, as printed here, reached England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Mexico, California, and several major American cities. Its lithotint printing and the handwritten note of a deposit at the New York clerk's office in August 1853 show that it was registered for copyright shortly after it was made. Minstrel shows of this era were built on blackface caricature performed mostly by white entertainers, and the library's subject headings reflect that, so the poster is as much a record of how audiences were being sold racist stereotypes as of the show itself. Its wide list of destinations also shows how far such troupes traveled in the 1850s.
