Ralph Stuart, the actor whose name fills the top of this 1904 poster, is shown in the role that gave the show its title, "By Right of Sword." The sheet was lithographed in color by The Courier Company of Buffalo, New York, a firm that printed many touring theatrical bills of the period, and the notes credit Edward Thurnaer with the direction. Melodramas like this one toured American cities and small towns in the early 1900s, and posters such as this were pasted on walls and storefronts to draw audiences. The bold lettering and large portrait reflect the star-centered advertising of the time.
