Silver presentation services were a traditional way for a state or city to honor a warship that bore its name, and this glass negative documents one given to the battleship *Kentucky* by citizens of the state. The ship, a Kearsarge-class battleship commissioned in 1900, was among the newer capital ships in the U.S. Navy at the turn of the century, and the photograph likely dates to the same period. Detroit Publishing Company, known for its broad record of American places and objects, made the image on an 8 by 10 inch glass plate. Its focus is the ceremonial tableware itself, which makes it a useful record of the decorative arts of naval display.
