A silver service presented by the citizens of Kentucky to the battleship named for their state is the subject of this 8 by 10 inch glass negative. Navies of the period often received such gifts from states and cities, and a service like this was typically displayed aboard ship as a visible link between a warship and the people it honored. The *Kentucky* was commissioned in 1900, and the Detroit Publishing Company, which made the negative, produced a large catalog of views of ships and places for a wide public.
