This view looks aft across the quarterdeck of the U.S.S. Kentucky, toward the after gun turrets that housed the ship's heavy main armament. Kentucky was one of the Illinois-class battleships of the U.S. Navy, commissioned in 1900, and its two-turret layout of large-caliber guns reflected the Navy's late-19th-century push to build a fleet capable of fighting on distant waters. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this large glass negative, documented American ships, cities and landscapes around the turn of the century, so the image captures a moment when steel battleships were a source of national pride.
