The battleship *Kentucky* was one of the Illinois-class ships of the U.S. Navy, named for the state and built in the mid-1890s as the country expanded its naval power. This view comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose large-format glass plate negatives documented American cities, ships and landscapes around 1900. The company's catalog dating places the picture at about 1900 to 1901, when the ship was in service and the Navy was a source of national pride. The 8 by 10 inch plate gives the image a fine level of detail.
