A silver punch bowl belonging to the battleship U.S.S. *Kentucky* is the subject of this glass dry plate negative, one of the few in the Detroit Publishing Company collection that focuses on a single object rather than a ship's deck or crew. The company, based in Detroit, sold views of American places and institutions in the early 1900s, and a shipboard piece like this would have appealed to naval families and visitors. The *Kentucky* was commissioned in 1900, so the negative dates from the ship's first years in service. Ceremonial silver like this bowl was often given to warships as a presentation piece, and the image preserves a detail of wardroom life that is easy to overlook.
