The bridge of the battleship U.S.S. Kentucky is the focus here, the raised command platform from which officers steered the ship and directed its course. Kentucky, an Illinois-class battleship, was commissioned in 1900, during a period when the United States was rapidly building up its navy after the Spanish-American War. The Detroit Publishing Company photographed many American warships and harbors around the turn of the century, and this 8 x 10 inch glass negative is part of that work. Its date is estimated at 1900 or 1901, which places the scene within a year or two of the ship entering service.
