The battleship *Kentucky*, named for the state, was commissioned in 1900, and this view likely shows her soon after she joined the fleet. She was one of the Indiana-class battleships, a pre-dreadnought design that mounted its heaviest guns in turrets and reflected the rapid expansion of the U.S. Navy after the Spanish-American War. The picture comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers used large glass negatives to record ships, cities and landscapes across the country in the early 1900s. The date is an estimate based on the company's work from that period.
