Captain Colby M. Chester's cabin aboard the battleship *Kentucky* is the focus here, a view of a commanding officer's private quarters rather than the ship's decks or guns. The *Kentucky* was a Kearsarge-class battleship commissioned in 1900, and its interiors were not often photographed for public viewing at the time. The picture offers a glimpse of the furnishings and daily surroundings of a senior naval officer at sea around 1900 to 1901. It was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely to document American scenes for sale to the public.
