The subject here is the cabin of the captain of the protected cruiser USS *Raleigh*, a rare view of a naval officer's private quarters rather than the ship's decks or guns. Captain Joseph Bullock Coghlan (1844-1908) commanded the *Raleigh* around 1898, a period when the Navy was expanding and the United States was drawn into the Spanish-American War. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm that photographed American towns, landscapes and ships for sale to the public, made the glass-plate negative. Interior views like this one show how officers lived aboard steel warships of the era, with furnishings arranged for work and comfort within tight quarters.
