Captain Joseph N. Miller, a career naval officer born in 1836, stands for this portrait taken aboard or beside the U.S.S. *Vermont*, the ship he commanded. By the early 1890s the *Vermont* had left active fighting service and was used as a receiving ship at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, where new enlisted men were processed before assignment to other vessels. The Detroit Publishing Company, known for its large-format views of American places and people, made the glass negative, and the picture gives a rare formal record of a naval commander at a moment when the Navy was moving from sail and wood toward steel warships.
