Captain John W. Philip stands on the bridge of the battleship Texas in this view, taken during the Battle of Santiago de Cuba on July 3, 1898. The record notes that the Spanish cruiser Vizcaya had been run ashore and the Colon and Oregon lay off the starboard bow, so the picture captures the moment when the Spanish squadron was being destroyed as the American fleet closed in. Philip, who had commanded the Texas and later the Oregon's peers in the fleet, was among the most respected officers of the Navy's new steel era. The photograph was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose catalog preserved many views of American ships from this period.
