The battleship *Oregon* is the ship in this view, and the record identifies its target as the Spanish cruiser *Cristóbal Colón* during the Battle of Santiago de Cuba on July 3, 1898. The *Oregon* had made a long run from San Francisco around South America to join the American fleet off Cuba, a voyage that helped fix the ship's reputation in the public mind. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued many photographs of American ships and places around the turn of the century, made the negative, so the picture reflects the period's appetite for images of the new navy.
