This picture shows a gun crew aboard the battleship U.S.S. Oregon, the ship whose long voyage from the Pacific to the Caribbean made it famous during the Spanish-American War. Oregon sailed around South America to join the American fleet off Cuba, arriving in time for the Battle of Santiago de Cuba on July 3, 1898, where the Spanish squadron was destroyed. The photograph was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for its large catalog of American views, and its glass negative preserves the men in their working clothes beside the ship's guns. Such crew portraits are valuable today because they show the ordinary sailors who carried out the battle.
