The USS *Oregon* is best known for its 1898 voyage, when the battleship sailed from the Pacific coast around South America to join the fleet off Cuba during the Spanish-American War, a passage of roughly 14,000 miles. This view shows one of the ship's 6-pounder guns, a quick-firing weapon meant to counter torpedo boats, with its crew standing by. The Detroit Publishing Company made the glass-plate negative, and its views of American places and people were widely sold as postcards and lantern slides. The record dates the image between 1896 and 1901, which places it in the years just after the *Oregon* entered service.
