Few pictures show the inside of a battleship's machinery as directly as this view of the engine room of the U.S.S. Oregon. The ship was commissioned in 1896 and gained fame in 1898, when she sailed from San Francisco around Cape Horn to join the fleet off Cuba during the Spanish-American War. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made large glass-plate photographs of American landmarks and industry in these years, recorded the ship's interior at a time when the new steel navy was a source of national pride. The negative is an 8 x 10 inch glass plate.
