Little in this glass negative identifies the vessel beyond its caption, which names the U.S.S. Washington and its engine room. The title comes from caption cards kept by the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency whose pictures went out to newspapers and magazines, so it has not been independently verified. The Navy has given the name to more than one warship, so the ship and the date remain open questions. Engine-room views like this one were valued for showing the steam machinery that drove the fleet, and they still help researchers study working conditions aboard early twentieth-century warships.
