The U.S.S. Solace was the first vessel the U.S. Navy fitted out as a hospital ship, and this view shows her ward room, the officers' dining space. Converted from a merchant steamer during the Spanish-American War in 1898, she carried medical supplies and staff to tend sick and wounded sailors. The Detroit Publishing Company, which documented American towns, landscapes and everyday life around 1900, made the photograph on an 8 by 10 inch glass negative.
