Inside the wardroom of the battleship *Maine*, where officers dined and gathered off duty, this 1896 view records a formal, well-appointed cabin of polished wood and upholstered chairs. The *Maine* had been commissioned only a year earlier, and it became one of the most famous ships in the country when it exploded and sank in Havana harbor in February 1898, an event that helped draw the United States into the Spanish-American War. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued photographs of American places and scenes, made the 8 x 10 inch glass negative.
