This group portrait shows the ship's company of the U.S.S. Maine, the battleship photographed in 1896, two years before it became a turning point in American history. The picture survives as an 8 by 10 inch glass negative in the Detroit Publishing Company collection, a firm known for its large catalog of American views around 1900. Commissioned in 1895, the Maine was one of the Navy's newer steel battleships, and this crew portrait records the men who served aboard it. The ship exploded and sank in Havana Harbor in February 1898, an event that helped push the United States into war with Spain.
