This is a group portrait of the crew of the U.S.S. *Kearsarge*, a screw sloop-of-war, arranged for the camera on the ship itself. The ship is best known for its 1864 battle off Cherbourg, France, when it sank the Confederate raider CSS *Alabama*. The picture was made on a large 8 x 10 inch glass plate, a format that recorded fine detail in faces and uniforms, and it comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed American scenes for commercial sale in this period.
