Sailors gather on the deck of the U.S.S. Kearsarge for Sunday morning services, a routine that structured life aboard American naval vessels of the period. The Kearsarge was a screw sloop-of-war best known for sinking the Confederate raider CSS Alabama off Cherbourg, France, in June 1864, nearly three decades before this picture was made. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this 8 by 10 inch glass negative, documented American landscapes, cities and institutions across the country in the 1890s, and its scenes of naval life are valuable for showing ordinary shipboard routines.
