The ship in this picture ran aground on Roncador Reef in the Caribbean in early February 1894, and the Navy abandoned it there. The Kearsarge had earned lasting fame in 1864, when it sank the Confederate raider CSS Alabama off Cherbourg, France. This image is a photograph of a drawing by Chris Johnson rather than of the wreck itself, so it shows how the stranded hull was pictured for viewers at the time. The Detroit Publishing Company, known for its late-nineteenth-century views, issued the image under its own catalog number.
