Named for the Union sloop that sank the Confederate raider CSS Alabama off Cherbourg, France, in 1864, the U.S.S. Kearsarge carried a name with a pointed history into its service as a battleship. This view comes from a large glass negative, about 18 by 22 inches, made by the Detroit Publishing Company, which was known for its wide survey of American scenery, cities, and industry around 1900. Large plates like this one recorded fine detail, and battleships of that era were a popular subject as the United States expanded its navy.
