The cruiser *Minneapolis*, named for the Minnesota city on the Mississippi, appears in this view on a large 18 by 22 inch glass negative, a format the Detroit Photographic Company used for its most detailed work. The record dates the plate only to between 1894 and 1901, a span that likely falls before the ship entered active service, so the picture may show her as a new steel warship. The Detroit company, later known as Detroit Publishing, made thousands of such views of American places, ships and rail routes, and its large negatives preserve fine detail in hull, rigging and superstructure that smaller formats could not.
