The picture shows the U.S.S. Marietta arriving at Curaçao, the Dutch island off the coast of Venezuela, in June 1908. The Caribbean was a regular route for American naval vessels then, and the island's harbor at Willemstad was a familiar port of call for ships passing through the region. The image survives as a glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress. Bain News Service supplied the title, which its records mark as unverified, so the ship's identity and the scene are best read as the caption gives them.
