Anchored at Hampton Roads, the U.S.S. *Sabine* was a sailing frigate that served as a school ship, a floating classroom for young sailors learning the rigging, gunnery, and seamanship of a warship. The photograph was made in 1864 by David B. Woodbury, a photographer active during the war, from a wet collodion glass negative. Hampton Roads, where the James and Elizabeth rivers meet Chesapeake Bay, was a crucial Union naval anchorage, and the image captures a moment when training continued amid the demands of wartime blockade and coastal operations.
