USS Nevada was a Wyoming-class battleship commissioned in 1916, and this 1918 view shows her at anchor in Hampton Roads, the broad harbor at the mouth of the James, Elizabeth and Nansemond rivers in Virginia that served as a major naval anchorage. The photograph was made by Harris & Ewing, the Washington, D.C. studio known for its large body of documentary and press pictures of government and military subjects. Nevada was among the first American battleships to use oil rather than coal as fuel, and by 1918 the navy was stationing its big ships in Hampton Roads while convoy and training operations ran through the region during the First World War.
