The title places this sheet at Haiyang Island, the setting of a naval battle in September 1894 usually called the Battle of the Yalu River. It was fought during the First Sino-Japanese War, when the Japanese fleet met the Chinese Beiyang Fleet off the coast of Korea. Japanese printmakers quickly produced colored woodcuts of such engagements for a public hungry for war news, and prints like this one turned the fighting into a patriotic scene of smoke, gunfire and battered hulls. The caption card gives no date, so the 1894 attribution comes from the title and should be treated as unverified.
