This view shows the battleship U.S.S. Oregon during the Battle of Santiago de Cuba on July 3, 1898, with its crew watching a shell land on the Spanish cruiser Cristóbal Colón as the ship tried to escape the harbor. The Oregon had made a famous voyage from San Francisco around Cape Horn to join the fleet, and its heavy guns helped sink or disable the Spanish squadron in the engagement. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial photography firm, made the negative, which preserves a moment of the Spanish-American War at sea.
