A pig taken from the Spanish cruiser Cristóbal Colón gives this view of the battleship Iowa an unusually homely character. The Colón was one of the Spanish warships lost at the Battle of Santiago de Cuba in July 1898, when a U.S. Navy squadron under William T. Sampson and Winfield Scott Schley destroyed the Spanish fleet off Cuba's southern coast. Scenes of everyday shipboard life like this one were popular with the public during and after the war. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm that sold views of American places and events, issued the picture as a glass plate negative.
