Sailors aboard the battleship U.S.S. Iowa turn their attention to a heap of potatoes in this 8 by 10 inch glass-plate negative from the Detroit Publishing Company. Peeling vegetables for a crew of several hundred was a daily chore on steel warships of the period, and the scene shows how this routine work ran alongside the business of a fighting ship. Iowa, commissioned in 1897, later saw action in the Spanish-American War in 1898, and images like this one record the ordinary daily life of the men who served aboard her.
