Aboard the U.S.S. Iowa, the ship's galley was the working kitchen that fed a crew of several hundred men at sea. The Iowa was one of the Navy's newer battleships when Detroit Publishing Company photographers recorded the ship around the turn of the century, and she had only recently joined the fleet when she fought at the Battle of Santiago de Cuba in 1898. Photographs like this one, made on glass plate negatives, show the galley's equipment and the cooks and sailors who ran it, a view of daily shipboard life that rarely reached the public.
