Aboard the battleship *Iowa*, a machine gun and its crew are the focus of this glass-plate negative, which the Detroit Publishing Company photographed in the years around 1900. The *Iowa* was commissioned in 1897, one of the first large steel battleships of the modern U.S. Navy, and it fought at the Battle of Santiago de Cuba during the Spanish-American War in 1898. Rapid-fire guns like this one were mounted on warships to defend against torpedo boats at close range. The sailors posed beside it show the everyday work of the ship's gun crews.
