The subject is a field gun aboard the U.S.S. Iowa, the battleship commissioned in 1897 as the Navy's first large steel battleship of its class to carry the state's name. Field guns of this kind were light, portable pieces that sailors trained with for landing parties and shore duty, so the picture shows a part of ship life that is easy to overlook beside the battleship's heavy main armament. The glass negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose large-format views of American places and Navy ships were widely sold around 1900.
