Seamen posed with a captured Spanish mine aboard the battleship U.S.S. Iowa give this picture its particular interest. The Iowa, commissioned in 1897, fought in the Spanish-American War and took part in the naval action off Santiago de Cuba in July 1898. Naval mines were a real danger to American warships in those waters, and crews often examined recovered devices closely. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this 8 x 10 inch glass negative, sold views of ships and scenic places to a wide public. The date here is an estimate, based on a 1901 company catalog listing.
