Rather than the ship as a whole, this view singles out one of the secondary guns on the battleship Iowa, a 6-pounder rapid-fire piece meant to defend against torpedo boats at close range. The Iowa was commissioned in 1897 and was among the most powerful American warships of her day, seeing action at the Battle of Santiago de Cuba during the Spanish-American War in July 1898. The negative carries the Detroit Photographic Company mark, and the firm's views of ships, towns and landscapes from around 1900 are now a major visual record of the period.
