Rather than the whole ship, this view focuses on one of the *Iowa*'s 4-inch guns, set against the steel of the battleship. The *Iowa* was commissioned in 1897 and fought at Santiago de Cuba in 1898 during the Spanish-American War, so the photograph likely dates from her early service. The Detroit Publishing Company, known for its views of American places and its catalogues, made the glass-plate negative, and the record notes an inscription on it referring to the battleship *Oregon*'s 10-inch gun. Seamen appear among the subjects, a reminder that the crew was part of the scene.
