A crew member's view down the barrel of a 6-inch gun aboard the U.S.S. Newark gives this picture its focus. The Newark was a steel protected cruiser from the Navy's post-1880s rebuilding program, and its quick-firing secondary guns were the weapons that sailors had to aim and load in close action. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued views of ships, ports and landscapes across the country, likely sold this image as a record of the modern navy. The glass negative, made between 1891 and 1901, shows the work of the gun crew at a time when American naval power was growing quickly.
