The title places this picture aboard the U.S.S. *Newark*, a protected cruiser of the early 1890s, with attention on its machine guns and the sailors and Marines who served them. Late-nineteenth-century cruisers carried such weapons to defend against torpedo boats at close range, and the Marine detachment shown in the subject headings was a standard part of a warship's crew. The Detroit Publishing Company made many views of American naval vessels, and this glass negative offers a close record of shipboard life and armament from the years when the steel navy was taking shape.
