Four officers of the U.S.S. Newark, a cruiser of the late 1800s, stand for this group portrait, the kind of formal record the Navy often made of its younger men. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm known for travel views across the United States, made the glass dry plate negative, which was printed on a large 8 x 10 inch format. The record dates the picture to between 1891 and 1901, based on the company's 1901 catalog, so it captures a period when the Navy was modernizing its fleet with steel warships. Photographs like this one show how officers presented themselves to family, the service, and the public at the turn of the century.
