The men in this group portrait are the chief petty officers of the U.S.S. Newark, posed together in what appears to be a ship's interior. The Newark was a steel protected cruiser commissioned in 1893, and chief petty officers were the veteran enlisted sailors who kept daily routines, watches and gunnery running under the commissioned officers. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this 8 by 10 inch glass negative, was known for large-format views of American life and institutions, and its catalog places the picture between 1891 and 1901.
